Up Close with Flowers Meetup

Up Close with Flowers Meetup

Sunday 28 September
Azalea Garden Road - 10am - 2 Hours
Virginia Beach Photography Group

Get up close with flowers and the insects that love them! A photograph should bring the audience a new experience, and we will focus on the details most people simply walk past. We will practice getting clear, colorful and interesting pictures that capture the imagination of the viewer.

As Monarch butterflies prepare to migrate, we should be able to capture them feeding before their long trek. This is also a great time for bees to begin preparing for winter by stocking up on pollen from the plentiful early fall blooms.

Black and White photography is a study of contrast, shadows, and interesting shapes. Without color to help tell the story, composition and lighting are the stars. This meetup is for all skill levels and any camera type, including cell phones. Scheduled later in the afternoon to take advantage of long shadows, and in a setting that lends itself perfectly to monochromatic images, this two hour meetup is an informative and fun way to explore the role of mood in photography.

Street Photography Meetup

Saturday 22 November
Monticello Ave, Norfolk, VA - 10am - 2 Hours
Virginia Beach Photography Group
Dawn Rykheart
Street photographers are observers by nature. They use photography as a way of connecting with the world and bringing back the moments that stand out. There are hints, feelings, ideas, stories, or questions in their photos that are meant to prompt the viewer to wonder about the rest of the story.
This two-hour meetup is for all skill levels and any camera type, including cell phones. We will be exploring downtown Norfolk, looking for the interesting details in everyday life that are often overlooked. After a discussion on what Street Photography is and how to go about it, we will walk Granby Street. And what we find will be different for everyone, that's the beauty of Street Photography, pictures are taken from the photographer's viewpoint instead of focusing on the viewer's perspective, leaving every image up to the interpretation of the viewer rather than leading them to it.

Renee Somers
With a lifelong passion for creativity and connection, I spent 25 years working as an art therapist, using the power of art to help others heal and express themselves. I earned my master's degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School and my undergraduate degree in Art Education from Virginia Wesleyan University. Now retired, I'm enjoying a slower pace of life with my family in beautiful Virginia Beach, VA. In my free time, I return to the heart of what drew me to art in the first place—painting the people and natural landscapes I love most.

This is a water color painting based on a photo I took last year when visiting MT. Love the wide open spaces and the beautiful sky. This photo was taken while sitting and relaxing along a river in Bigfork. Love to enjoy the views and then incorporate into my paintings. Water colors are such a great choice for landscapes because of the way they flow and blend together just like nature.

Spring is in the air. I have recently been doing some daffodil paintings. For this painting I did a wash and instantly saw the potential for more daffodils and space for the lamb peeking through them. One of my former instructors always said, ?Listen to your painting.? This is exactly what I did here. Possibly, the idea of a lamb was inspired by the season of Easter as well.

I painted this one for a watercolour weekly challenge on FB where the subject was fish. My goldfish is looking up towards daylight. I spattered clean water on damp paint to give the impression of light dispersion in shallow water. I like the effect of clean water pushing paint away to add interest and light.

Title or Location: "Loving Lessons"
This A3 watercolor was done as a commission for a Texas based charity called Leave it for the Pooch. They approached me in 2021 and asked if I would like to donate some of my work for their yearly raffle that raises money for animal rescue. I was very happy to be a part of this and for the last 4 years have done a special piece just for this auction and send to Texas as my contribution for this cause. "Loving Lessons" is this years painting. My daughter has always had a special bond with
